Preparing for your hearing test
How booking works, what happens at the clinic and what you see afterwards.
Booking
- You book on your clinic's booking page. First you read how your data is used, and accept it.
- Then you answer a short questionnaire about your hearing. You can also skip it and finish it later.
- If you have earlier hearing results, you can add a photo or a PDF of them. It can be an audiogram, an Apple Hearing Test result or a Mimi result.
- OScreen can read the values from the file, or you type them in. Your clinic gets the file and only the values you confirm.
- Last, you pick a time and give your email. You get your 6-character code on the screen and by email, with a QR code.
Before the visit
- To sign in, enter your code in the “Your code” box on the OScreen home page. We email a sign-in link to the address you booked with. It works for 15 minutes.
- You can finish the questionnaire at home. Sign in with your code, then open it from your booking.
- You can change or cancel your booking until 2 hours before your time. Sign in with your code to do it.
- Bring your code, or the QR code from the email. Bring glasses too if you need them to read.
At the clinic
- You show your code or QR code to the tablet. The answers you gave at home are already there.
- The tablet takes you through three steps: questionnaires, ear pictures and a hearing test.
- Questionnaires: the tablet asks only the questions you did not answer at home.
- Ear pictures: the staff use a small ear camera to take pictures and short videos of your ear canals.
- Hearing test: you take off glasses and earrings, put on headphones and hold a response button. Each time you hear a beep, even a faint one, press the button.
- If you need help during the hearing test, press HELP on the tablet.
- Some clinics add a speech test. You listen to spoken numbers or sentences, sometimes with background noise.
- Some clinics add Brain Vitals: short tasks on the tablet that measure your reaction time. You can say no.
- How long the visit takes depends on your clinic's tests. Ask your clinic how much time to set aside.
After the visit
- When your results are ready, we email you a sign-in link.
- After that, you can sign in with your code for up to one year after your visit.
- You see your results as numbers and an audiogram, with your ear pictures and the files from your visit.
- This is a screening, not a diagnosis. Talk to your clinic about what the results mean for you.
- Brain Vitals results are for your clinic only. So is your reaction time from the hearing test.
- If your visit was on an up-to-date tablet, you also see a PDF of the report without these results. For visits before that update, a report PDF that includes these results is not in your account. Your clinic has it.
Your data
Your account holds your email, your phone number if you gave one, and your language. Your answers, the files you add and your results are stored with it.
This is the text you accept when you book:
By booking you create an account with your email address and, if you give one, your phone number. Otos Health stores your baseline questionnaire answers and the results of the hearing test: the audiogram, ear canal images and videos, the speech-in-noise result and questionnaires. They are kept on servers in the United States (Oregon), so that you can view them online with your code and your clinic can use them in your care.
If you add earlier hearing results (a photo or PDF of an audiogram, an Apple Hearing Test result or a Mimi result), the file is stored too. The service may read the values from it with Google Gemini AI, in the United States. Google does not use the file to train its AI. You check the values, and your clinic gets the file and only the values you confirm.
If your clinic runs Brain Vitals (short reaction-time tasks on the tablet), those results are stored too. They are shown to your clinic only, not in your account.
If you link your health record (for example Epic MyChart), the link is stored with your account. So is what the service reads from your chart: your name, birth year, sex, email, health conditions and prescribed medicines. Your report goes into that record only if you send it.
This is protected health information under HIPAA. Otos Health processes it as a service provider to your clinic and keeps it encrypted. Otos Health does not sell it, and shares it only with your clinic, a health record you send it to and Google, except as required by law. Google hosts the service, sends its emails and runs the AI reading.
You can view, download or delete your data from your account at any time. When you ask to delete it, Otos Health deletes your data from the service within 30 days of your request. Backup copies are removed within 7 days after that, and Google may take up to 180 days more to remove every copy from its systems. A record of your bookings and of this consent (time, IP address and browser) stays, without your email, and so do copies of the emails we sent you. Your clinic keeps its own record of your visit.
